Why weigh the swatch

Yardage charts guess for an average knitter. Your swatch already knows your yarn, your needles and your stitch pattern. A 4 × 4 in (10 × 10 cm) square on a kitchen scale tells how much yarn each square of fabric takes.

How to use the result

For a sweater, add up the pieces: front, back and two sleeves (measure each as a rectangle at its widest). Cables and textured stitches eat more yarn, so weigh a swatch in the same stitch. The calculator rounds up and adds one spare skein: running out of a dye lot is worse than a leftover.
